I’ve always had a mountain bike until possibly soon. I went to the bike store and tried one out. It felt rather weird bending down so low and it felt like my arms were reaching pretty far. The bike was a S and I’m 5′ 3″
Is this just since I’m not used to it or does it not fit me right?

You may not be used to the position…or HALF THE WEIGHT of ur Mnt bike. Don’t go cheap tho’ A excellent road bike is awesome and comparing to a mnt bike is the difference between a p/u truck and a corvette!
Make sure you get fitted properly to ur road bike…its very vital!
Yeah. Fit is First. When that’s settled, you’ll need to ride it a while to get use to the new geometry. You may need to tweak the seat back/forth, tilt, a bit. Also the tilt of the handle bars can be adjusted, even their height. But with a genteel fitting, adjustments must be insignificant.
Did the bike shop fit you or did you select a bike and went for a ride. There are other adjustments they can do like for and aft of the saddle and different length stems. If you rode a bike too large you will feel stretched out and uncomfortable. Did you question if this was the genteel bike size and tell them why it didn’t feel right. Try another shop and question them questions about fit.
I by no means felt as comfortable on my road bike as on my mountain bike since you use slightly different muscles & ride in different positions. It may feel weird getting into a tucked position on a road bike, but it shouldn’t feel uncomfortable.
You can’t find out if you like a bike if it doesn’t fit you. You may need a different size frame, or a smaller stem. You force even need to adjust the handlebar or seat height or position. Someone at a excellent bike shop must be able to fit you properly; then you can see if you like it.
Doubtless was to small. I would say you are just not used to it. You will. Dredge up to get the right size though
Could be both. Road bikes do have a somewhat lower handlebar to saddle ratio than mountain bikes, although you must feel comfortable with your hands on the brake hoods. At first it feels a bit weird if you are used to sitting up, but that low position will be a plus if you have a strong headwind and many miles to go.
