I picked one up at a garage sale now. It has European style inner tubes, 27 x 1 1/4″ rims. It is a 12-speed. The handlebars are like a mountain bike but a small flared – not racer handlebars. It looks like it’s about 20 years ancient, but it’s in fantastic shape. I know Bianchi made a model called a Del Mondo, but I don’t reflect this is a Bianchi, as it doesn’t say Bianchi anywhere on the bike that I can see.

Should I buy a Diamond Back Coil EX 2009 or a Giant SE?

I’m in the market for a mountain bike, and I’m debating between these 2 models. The Diamond Back is at Dick’s, and the Giant is at my local bike store. I know that some people dislike purchasing bikes from department supplies, but apparently Dick’s has ‘certified’ bike technicians.

Anyway, the Diamond Back is full suspension, with dual walled rims and disc brakes. The Giant is a hardtail with dual walled rims. They both have Shimano components.

I’m guessing the shocks must be pretty terrible on both since the Giant is $389 and the Diamond Back is on sale from $650 to $450. Any advice is valued! Thanks!
I had the same thought about full suspension being junk if it isn’t rather expensive. I checked on multiple forums about it before even entertaining the thought.
Then I checked out this site called buzzillions – and the diamondback was rated #27 (http://www.buzzillions.com/dz_167727_diamondback_coil_ex_reviews) and the Giant was rated #237 (http://www.buzzillions.com/dz_167341_giant_boulder_se_reviews). When I added that with the disc brakes/dual wall wheels, it seemed value asking.
Thanks for the input, I will doubtless go with the Giant, but if anyone else has experience with the 2 it’d be fantastic to hear. All I’ve heard is that the fork and rear suspension will need replacing after a while, which I can deal with. Thanks again!

About 6 days ago I questioned about a Motobecane 300 HT from Bikes Direct. John M stated the bike had a freewheel & not a freehub/cassette. WRONG! M V stated “Most of the lower-end Motobecane’s are total junk.” Again…incorrect. The only person with a detailed right answer was Ancient Hippie. The bike does have a cassette not a freewheel. although it’s a ‘Sunrace’ and not a better celebrated Shimano or SRAM. It does have double walled Weinmann rims. Even the ‘pot metal’ looking seatpost is really alloy.

Is it a fantastic mountain bike? No. Is it what I was looking for to handle set alight trails & a bit of city riding to & from those trails? Yes. Thanks for nothing guys. Most of your answers stunk.

bikeworks…The spokes are stainless steel! So you didn’t look either. And yes, I stated in the original question my intended uses for the bike.

Hey guys, I like moutain biking but had by no means really been serious about it ’till now. The only bike I have right now is a 6 year ancient NEXT I got from Wal-Mart for my 11th b-day. I know that NEXT is pretty much crap, but I’ve ridden that thing a lot and its served my pretty well until now. Anyway, I’m looking for a new bike and I want to really get a real mountain bike, not just some bike from Wal-Mart. I’ve searched around for a while and it seems like Iron Horse is a pretty respectable brand and has some pretty excellent prices too. I’m on a pretty tight budget, so anything over 300 is pretty much out of the question, but I found an Iron Horse on sale for only 200 on performancebike.com. Must I buy it?

Mt. Snow in Vermont has downhill mountain biking in the summer. They are selling their used iron horse yakuza kumicho rental bikes for $750. I have mountain biked at mt. snow before and used this bike as a rental and it was awesome. It feels like it has a bullet proof frame, 203mm double crown boxxer fork, 8 inch coil in the rear, and extremely powerful disc breaks. It obviously had some insignificant cosmetic scratches since it is a rental and used heavily, but overall it is very well maintained by the qualified staff that run the place. They have dozens of these bikes, all yakuza kumichos. I believe they are the 2007 models, but could be incorrect. I reflect that they used to retail new for about $1,600. I’m not a serious advanced downhill criterion, but have done the more advanced rugged material at mt. snow, which is celebrated for having some knarly material. I have skied my whole life at mt. snow, and I beyond doubt want to start downhill biking each summer. Do you reflect this bike is a excellent buy for me? will it last long? I just feel better buying from professionals who maintain them well rather than some shimoke on craigslist desperate for a sale.

I was thinking of buying a new road bike, but instead chose to swing by a yard sale and buy and ancient bike for $20 since I thought it would be cool to learn how to take everything apart and fix it up.

First off I fixed the punctures in both tires, simple enough. But most of the bike is freaking enclosed in dirt and grime. Is there any simple way to clean up the parts? I bought this small ‘clean-up’ kit from walmart that had a jagged scythe looking tool for clearing the gunk from between the cranks (it worked really well), and it also came with a coarse brush that I have been using with oil to try to get the rest cleaned up, and it’s just not effective well. Can I just soak the individual parts in something?

How do I get the chain off? It looks like it could only be removed if I cut it.

If I buy new gear cables, do they have to be anything specific? Or will cheap generic ones work?

One more question. It has dirt tires on it now, but it doesn’t have any suspension. I thought mountain bikes has suspensions. Did someone just place trail tires on a road bike?

I have been interrogated and harassed by the same sales clerk at a Circle K here in Chandler, Arizona, USA when buying cigarettes. I know a clerk must question if I am at least eighteen (which I am nearing nineteen), and must see my ID. I always answer, “Yes, ma’m/sir,” and have my ID primed to hand to the clerk. With no facial hair, 5′8″ and not extremely buff, I look relatively young, but I feel as though I’m being harassed when after I say loud and clear that I am, indeed 18, the clerk repeatedly questions in an incredulous manner and a raised eyebrow, “What was that…?” and then interrogates me by telling me to repeat the name listed on the driver’s license. She also scanned the ID, so it did pass (it is my understanding that there are fake ID’s which can pass the scan check, though). As I said: I feel harassed, and my main question is: can the clerk interrogate me on my ID, etc.,? It is my understanding that after visually looking and scanning my ID, and asking if I’m at least 18, they are no longer liable. Anything more is tedious and extremely rude. What can I do about this? I know I can just go to a different gas station, which I sometimes do when it’s convenient–and it’s usually not a conundrum, I just wish for some closure.

The sad part is, I don’t smoke–I can’t stand it. I run three times a week, mountain bike, and do a lightweight lift routine each other day, I’m vegetarian and take a multivitamin each daylight. The thought of killing my guts disgusts me. The pack of cigarettes I buy are for my dad…

I’m getting back in shape….blah blah blah. My ancient mountain bike is a Nishiki that I got for about $180 about 6 years ago with a hard tail and hard front…lol. No major problems or replacements in all that time shows I’m not too hard on bikes. Jumping off curbs is huge for me. But, I have started riding a lot more lately and will place 40-50 miles a week on the bike path and dirt trails. I need a bike that will provide a excellent time on the trails and make sure it wont break down on the way to work. I’m looking at either the Diamondback Response XE (w/disc brakes) from Dick’s Sporting Goods for $300 or the Specialized Hardrock Disc for $400 on sale at my local bike shop. Bike shop has customer service and excellent info. They will tune it up and provide maintenance for a year FREE! Is the Specialized bike value the difference?

I am looking for a solid hardtail mountain bike that will be used for some kinda rough trails. I am keen to buy over the internet so a more expensive bike that is on sale for less than $800 will be fine too as long as my size is left (i am 5′7). The bike must be honestly lightweight if possible.
