Mountain Biking – Newbie Tips?

So I got tired of using my mountain bike I got for christmas on country roads. I hit the local nature reserve where one part features a load of jumps. It went well the first 4 times I went down the hill. The 5th time I face-planted, tearing up both my hands requiring bandages and splitting my helmet. My face is also all grazed and swollen.

At that point, covered in mud and dirt and blood I was scared. I was alive. I realised that this is what I wanted to do. I fell in love with a sport ive hardly tried.

So I am getting a friend who is in the same situation (mountain bike, but never used for mountain biking terrain) and we will (hopefully) be going on two-person rides through various nature reserves. I am going to do a BIT easier routes to get more used to it before going back to the one I nearly killed myself on.

So my question is this:

Any tips for a 17 year old who, with a friend, is about to enter the world of Mountain Biking?

I have a helmet and first aid kit, but thats about it as far as safety gear. Im saving up for more, but my family is not a wealthy family. We struggle. So its a bit difficult. I love my helmet though, as that face-plant would have killed me since the rock split my helmet open!

Always wear a helmet kids

Eventually I hope to get 2 more mates on board (ive put a facebook status to find anyone who is interested) and have ourselves a 4-man (well, boy lol) team.

Why are women and men’s bikes made differently?

Why do mens bikes have a bar across the the top and womens are make without this? some guy told me that it is because women need to get of the bike without showing their undergarments and men dont, Is that true?

okay, so on my bike my back gears are messed up. the dial says it is on gear 1 but when you look at the chain it says gear 3. gear 2 is really on 4 and so on is there a way to fix it or do i need a new bike. the bike isn’t a really nice brand, just like a target one or something like that

hi. I have a trek 3700 bike. I would like to do some tricks and other stufff. I would like first how to do a wheelie. In what gear, etc. etc. Also i wolud like to do dome cool tricks like going down staris (big or long ones) etc. By the way i would also like to do some downhill, jumps. I dont like BMX i only want to get in a downhill competition. Other thing I would like to know is whether it is better to buy disc brakes or is it enough with normal ones.

And also I would like to know how to improve my resistance speed etc, So i would like to know some excercises or something.. i want to know everything about downhill, mountain bike. and other extreme types. It is okay with my bike or do i need other one. Thanx

Need some advice about family cycling?

I have a 18-month-old child and would like to take her on rides with me around the neighborhood. Would she (and I) be safer (and happier) with a child seat or a trailer?

Also, what kind of bike is ideal for biking with kids (hybrid, mountain, comfort)? If you would like to give a specific brand and/or model, that would help also.

Shift gears on a mountain bike?

I have a 26″ Mens’ NEXT PowerX Dual-Suspension Mountain Bike that I purchased online at Wal-Mart. I took for a ride the other week and was fine and got it out the other day and for some reason it seems like it wants to shift gears or at least I think that is what it is doing but not sure. I just hear a clicking sound down around the chain and not sure what it is? Does anyone have any suggestions?

how do I make a counter claim if I was already see in court and found reliable?

A friend of mine was brought to court because, of her kid running in to some ones car while riding his bike. Now they have been to court but the Judge did want to hear it! They sided with the claimer and told my friend that she had to pay the damages that her kid didn’t even do! We took pictures and took the bike with us but, the judge wasn’t trying to hear it…Even when my friends son said he hit the car in the front and not in the back, where this lady claims that the kid hit it. She even denied her own plates of her car…The stupid judge didn’t even check! Now a little kids bike can’t make holes in a finder of a car like this person is clamming. And we want to counter claim but don’t know how. The lady wants my friend to pay 1,200.00$ for nothing!!! Maybe if the kid was on a mountain bike with metal pedals, but he wasn’t he was on a little huffy kids bike just got his training wheels off and to dodge a car that was speeding through the street he had to run into the lady’s car but the damage she claims he made was already there! I think she just wants money and because of the language barrier the stupid person got what she wanted! .now how do we counter this misjudgment?
The judge said we can counter claim!!!…just don’t know how to go about it…And isn’t there a byes law for this sort of thing…it wasn’t a trial… Its a civil matter! Can I please get someone that knows what they are talking about..:)
