what gear (front/back) for faster speeds on a mountain bike?

just got mountain bike trying to figure out how to adjust and use the gears. i want to keep it on one gear for all road circumstances mostly for quick speeds. i am going to take it to work so the road is all even level with a slight incline. what gear is the fastest for front and back gears to be in? thanks
