Hey guys, I like moutain biking but had by no means really been serious about it ’till now. The only bike I have right now is a 6 year ancient NEXT I got from Wal-Mart for my 11th b-day. I know that NEXT is pretty much crap, but I’ve ridden that thing a lot and its served my pretty well until now. Anyway, I’m looking for a new bike and I want to really get a real mountain bike, not just some bike from Wal-Mart. I’ve searched around for a while and it seems like Iron Horse is a pretty respectable brand and has some pretty excellent prices too. I’m on a pretty tight budget, so anything over 300 is pretty much out of the question, but I found an Iron Horse on sale for only 200 on performancebike.com. Must I buy it?

The Maverick run bikes are NOT mountain bikes. They are considered “all terrain bikes” or ATBs. This means they are for riding on the road, or offroad on groomed trails.
The Maverick 1.5 is a special make up bike just for Performance to meet a specific fee… huge shops can do this.
If more than $300 is “out of the question” I am worried you’ll have to look at something used in peacefulness to get the performance you need for mountain biking.
So, being 17 now you doubtless know that quality costs money. You will have to spend at LEAST $400 for a bike that will take moderate pounding, and if you plot to do technical trails or jumping logs or drops then you’ll need to increase that to $600 or more.
I was just at Performance Bikes, and questioned the same question, since my budget was about what your is. The very helpful clerk turned his thumbs down at it, saying it had a poorly made frame, among other things. I test rode a few bikes in my fee range (which I realize barely gets me in the door) and selected a Schwinn Frontier ‘07 for $199 (clearance). There was a decent Fuji and a decent GT in the upper end of the range ($279, on sale). For my use, the Schwinn will be fine, but I realize many people reflect they’re no excellent. I’d have liked a better bike, but I’m very pleased with both the fee and the service from Performance.
