kids mountain bikes I just won 1st prize from a contest and I was wondering what I should do with it?
I won a titan mountain bike and helmet and I don’t neeed a bike. All of the kids in my family already have bikes so I was thinking about donating it to a child at Christmas. How do I go about doing this> I don’t want to just give it to a charity since it force go to a greedy person who works there. Where can I find an actual child in need that could use this bike. Or is there a charity that is TRUSTWORTHY that I could give it to that would really give the bike to a child in need? I live in Michigan.

What makes a rubble of rocks become a marvel of the world, or some chunks of metal become the most romantic place to propose marriage? After making the effort to go somewhere for sightseeing, how do you get the most out of the experience, to suit your budget, time and personality? From guidebooks to bus tours, there is a range of options to ensure that places come to life. These tips are based on experiences in Europe.
For model, there you are in Paris, at the Louvre, underneath IM Pei’s glass pyramid. Looking around the lobby, the escalators lead up towards multiple entrances to the wings of the ancient palace, so crammed with riches beyond compare. Where to start?

Tour types

***No tour:

You stand in front of the Mona Lisa and say ‘eh’ before moving on to the next Da Vinci ‘eh’ then a Michelangelo ‘looks like the other dude’. I did this the first time I went to the Louvre and followed the ‘quantity not quality’ mode. While I did have the time to find the small figurines in the Egyptian area, did I truly appreciate them?
Advantages: takes less time, go where you want, when you want.
Disadvantages: how would you find out how Da Vinci got the lines so fine on such a small painting (Mona Lisa) or that some guy hacked at David’s left toe with a hammer in 1991 (Accademia, Florence)? The tale behind the artwork and artist is often the entertainment more than the mere physical presence.
Suited to: people on a budget, people who don’t like other people, lack of time, lone travellers

Fee: nothing

***Guidebook:

Walking around with the gallery’s guide or your own book that clarifies who-what-when-why-how about an exhibit/place.
Advantages: pick out the bits that interest you before you see them. Find out a bit more. Comes from a sole source, approved by relevant people.
Disadvantages: May not learn other things. For occasion, if you had by no means tried smoked herring for breakfast, you wouldn’t know whether you liked it or not. Or you force walk right past some Goya, when he’s the kind of artist that would really appeal to horror movie fans.
Suited to: people who like to study, those who have a specific interest, lone travellers

Fee: varies depending on country, usually around AUD10.

***Audio guide:

hire a device to listen to tracks for selected pieces of a gallery or museum. Follow the map/guide and play the track when you get to the cut. For model to look at the Winged Victory of Samothrace at the Louvre and clog up the stairwell with other agog tourists.
Advantages: can skip bits that don’t interest you. Provides the highlights. Saves time.
Disadvantages: force miss out on pieces not included in the audio guide since you walk right past it. May be bored by the voice. Last guide I had sounding like he was sucking on a prune lacking about as much verbal outcome…
Suited to: Studious types who’d rather spend more time looking than reading, self-determining type or couple (shared headset).
Fee: varies depending on country and level of content, usually around AUD10.

***Small group (1-5 people):

Your guide knows you by name, tailors the tour to suit your timings and interests, information is more two-way rather than purely transmit. For model, I went to Auckland in July 2006 and booked in for a day of mountain biking. Yep, it was cold, windy, drizzling. I was the only person, but the tour went ahead anyway. I had Bee-Bee all to myself and while we waited for the rain to ease, she did a palm reading and predicted my future as a fantastic writer. Fortunate she was also a excellent guide, as the palm-reading bit is yet to reveal itself!
Advantages: Get a more personal service; guide may suggest something relevant to you individually, eg for tea lovers going through caffeine withdrawal in Paris ‘you simply must go to the Mariage Frères teashop then!’ or they may suggest a restaurant near your hotel and places to avoid.
Disadvantages: usually the most pricy kind of tour and a tip is also expected. If there’s a personality clash then the day could be a drag. Also, they may be in cahoots with other businesses to try and rope you into going to restaurants, for which they receive a commission.
Advice:
—-Basically, take anything they suggest with a skeptical mind, but still be polite. The nicer you are, then the nicer they are.
—-Make sure you go with an agency, rather than some guy off the street who offers to take you around. They may be real, but even so, there is no administrative control/insurance etc.
Suited to: Those who are after the real experience, ie the custom-made Spanish omelette rather than a McDonalds siesta burger; those who have a bit more money
Fee: Depends on the country. In Western Europe = around $AUD90 per person (then a tip)

***Huge group:

Usually about 10-20 people wearing headset to pick up on the guide’s voice as they lead you around, stopping you at exhibits/interests to give their spiel eg ‘ This 18th century china bowl has the utmost significance, for it was used to….’
Advantages: Makes what would be dull in a book, come to life— assuming you get a excellent guide. In Florence, we had Christina, an art student who truly loved what she did and made sense of the iron rings hanging off centuries-ancient walls so forever after, I know what they mean.
If you delight in people, sometimes the tour groups have lunch together so you can meet fellow travelers and exchange tales about dodgy restaurants.
Disadvantages:
—-inconsistent information. For model in Florence, Mum and I had three tours with the same company and three different sets of information as to a what happened to the head of Primavera, a statue on the Ponte Santa Trinita. While it’s not so vital to know the facts (you can get that from books) it does detract from the experience, no topic how entertaining the description of how Giuliano Medici was dramatically assassinated during High Mass in the Duomo Cathedral in the middle of a service. And the gore that followed as his brother Lorenzo tracked down the assassins and conspirators.
—-The Chic or Geek factor. For the style conscious and teenagers, you may cringe at looking like a dick walking around with stickers and earplugs. Unless you’re one of the retired Americans with Hawaiian shirts who don’t seem to care.
—-Hearing Voices. Having to hear more than one language rattled off by bi-lingual tour: by the end of a day trip to Versailles, I felt I knew Spanish. Well, I knew enough that it would be hard to know. So quick!!!
Suited to: Safe-seekers (ie non-adventurous), medium to high budget, couples and families
Fee: Depends on the country. In Western Europe = around $AUD90 per person for a half-day tour. More money if lunch and transport are required.

Basically,
if you’re on a budget…use your own guide book or share an audio guide
if you like people….go the small group or huge group option
if you’re time poor: no guidebook. Just wander around. At least though try to read up before to see which bits you need to visit.

Hemorrhoids are, in my opinion, one of the most painful circumstances someone can suffer, not to mention embarrassing. I classify hemorrhoids as a disease, not since I am a doctor but since, to my simple way of thinking, they cause dis-ease; i.e. they take away ease of living. I know – I suffered from an external hemorrhoid/skin tag conundrum for two years and, having assessed different remedies, found something that works.

In 2006 I had a terrible coughing fit and felt a tearing sensation in the anal area. I ignored this but over the next few days it developed itchiness and discomfort. I had been taking long-distance car trips as a sales person, and was thought it force be some sort of infection or fungal conundrum, and initially tried anti-fungal creams, but to no effect. I went to the doctor and he said it was pruritis and prescribed another cream and said I must take metamucil as a high-fiber additive to my cereals.

This had very small effect so the next step was an appointment with the proctologist. After forking out a reasonably large chunk of that week’s commission to hear the “expert’s” views, his conclusion was that it was an anal skin tag and that, after the creams et cetera I had tried to date “I am not sure there is any agent that can guarantee an outcome and that, in many situations, nature is just as effective in dealing with some of these problems” (Italics mine) . He then waffled on about the fact that “local anesthetic excision” was a possible behavior, but that he wasn’t at all sure it would produce a satisfactory conclusion. I thought if he could not guarantee a successful conclusion to what was described as a painful operation, I would look for some alternative, natural remedy.

A friend who is a nurse, seeing my discomfort, and hearing that I had received small or no help from traditional doctors, not compulsory I visit a Chinese herbalist. I went along and clarified my quandary to an ancient-looking Chinese lady whose English was restricted, to say the least. After many gesticulations, she “clicked” that the conundrum was one to do with an external hemorrhoid. After initial performance, including looking at my tongue, and lacking looking at the proctologist’s report, she was able to tell me a lot of what my health issues were. She and her assistant who translated mentioned diet a lot, and about how “Before you erect (or furnish) a house, you need to clean it up “. They were referring to the poor diet choices I had been subjecting my body to (which was the “house”). As a traveling salesman I would often buy quick food for its convenience. I had a penchant for curry- my sales partner was Indian! -, as well as fried rice, fried eggs, and fried bacon …you get the picture!

So I had to treat my INSIDE condition before I would see a change on the outside! A lot of so-called remedies and “cures” for hemorrhoids that I have seen advertised ignore this completely, promising incredible consequences in unbelievably small time frames but I notice that in a lot of the health emails I receive, diet is now receiving extra focus. My diet and the stresses of my work-and how I reacted to stresses at work- were just as much problems as the initial coughing fit, or whatever caused the skin tag originally! It was dawning on me that there was no quick fix behavior to the external hemorrhoid conundrum. The Chinese doctor mentioned the liver and kidneys as very vital to health commonly, and that by detoxifying my body I could improve my chances of reducing and eliminating hemorrhoids. I can still hear the ancient wizened woman saying in my ear “No fizzee! No spicee!”

The first thing, then, that I had to change was my diet. I took some noxious-tasting Chinese herbs for a few weeks, and using part of the same concoction, would bathe the affected end in a small tub of warm water, rather like a sitz bath, which is often recommended for hemorrhoid circumstances. As to which precise herbs you use, you may need to consult with your local Chinese herbalist and I can give additional details at my site detailed.

A more common sitz bath involves mixing salt or baking soda in a tub of warm water, and soaking the anal area in it for about 15-20 minutes. It works by cleaning the infected and swollen area, as well as increasing the blood flow to the pelvic region. See this condition for more details. One must do this about twice a day, preferably after emptying the bowels. Some of the foods I had to give up were:

Deep-fried or fried foods
Coffee, chocolate, Milo
Wine & beer
Food that has been burned e.g. naughtily burned toast. In fact, I was advised not to toast bread at all, but just warm it up slightly so it was easily digestible.

I gave up all the above in the first six weeks of my liver diet and felt a fantastic relief commonly in the piles circumstances, but gradually, in combination with the detoxification program, have been able to re-include many of the above items in my meals to a lesser or greater extent. After a year of being pain-free I did a wonderful detoxification program that involved enemas and drinking only natural fruit juices and distilled water and all the pain and discomfort disappeared. Plus my guts felt better! If I have a “relapse” I know what to do.

So diet and detoxification play a much greater part in eliminating piles or hemorrhoids than is usually mentioned in articles on this theme. There are things you can do to help your condition immediately if you have hemorrhoid symptoms, but lacking changing your diet, and embracing some kind of detoxification program, the symptoms will return. If you do make the changes, all you will need to do then is the occasional maintenance regime.

Now, for model I have been able to go mountain biking with my son, something I could not have envisaged when I first experienced that itching, burning, and horrible sensation when I first realized I had the external hemorrhoid conundrum. I am not glad about the experience but I am glad that it has taught me a greater, more fundamental certainty: to deal with the fruit (hemorrhoids) you must first go to the root (what you have been feeding on)-and this doubtless extends beyond food and diet.

dirt bike build from mountain bike?

Ok, so I’ve got a mongoose mountain bike… needs some work. and my dad has a 44cc homelite chainsaw that needs some work… i wanna try to fix both, and I want to use the saw to convert my mountain bike into a dirt bike… is this possible? the bikes got full suspension, trigger shifters, front disk brakes, huge nobby tires, etc. i got it on sale for 125$ out of 200$. would it be possible to remove the pedals, mount the saw, run the chain to the saw, use the original shifters on the rear to switch the back gears (its got 7 gears on the rear) and use the front shifter to control the throttle? I want to just completely remove the pedals and front derailer and place the saw in its place… would 44cc’s be enougn power? I’m 160 pounds and the bike is pretty set alight as it is aluminum. thanks for any dreams!

Well as for where would i place my feet? I was going to run a pipe through the bracket that held the pedals and use that as foot mounts… as for the saw not being powerful enough… i thought that, but i also thought if I could switch gears i could just keep it geared low and have it at full throttle… as for the chain tension , thats why i was trying to use the original drive teach… but now i realized thanks to the suspension system they used there’s no way i could mount it where I wanted to… and plus the chain is on the incorrect side of the saw… so I’m beginning to realize it’d be better to just get a real dirt bike…. lol… thanks all though!

Fall is one of the most gorgeous seasons in Ontario, and after last weeks early fall colour tour through the Kawarthas east of Toronto, it was time yesterday to check out the areas west of Toronto. My husband and I set off on the highway, left the 401 at Mississauga Road and drove north into rolling agricultural farmland. Our first fascinating village along the way was Glen Williams, a small hamlet outside of Georgetown, whose former sawmill now houses more than 30 artists and artisans. We headed north along the scenic Credit River and drove up onto the Niagara Escarpment and literally stumbled over the Cheltenham Brickworks, a now abandoned brickmaking factory dating back to 1930 that utilized the area’s clay soil to manufacture bricks for Toronto’s housing boom. Abandoned industrial buildings always hold a weird fascination for me, and they offer fantastic opportunities for curious photographers.

Not far away is another very unique area, the Cheltenham Wilderness, a unique ecological formation of weathered terra cotta hued rock, that originated as a result of deforestation and overgrazing during the early 1900s. It’s a fascinating landscape of undulating hills of red clay with greenish stripes, due to the soil’s red and gray iron oxide content.

The 800-kilometre-long Bruce Trail that goes all the way from Niagara Falls to the tip of the Bruce Peninsula snakes through this region, and there are several entry points close by. The Niagara Escarpment is a truly unique habitat and home to 300 bird species, 53 mammals, 36 reptiles and amphibians, 90 fish and 100 varieties of special interest flora including 37 types of wild orchids. UNESCO named Ontario’s Niagara Escarpment a World Biosphere Reserve in 1990. It’s a well loved spot among hikers and naturalists.

We headed east and down the Niagara Escarpment again and drove north in its shadow to the Forks of the Credit area and the quaint small village of Belfountain. This well loved excursion destination was founded in the 1820 by Scottish and Irish immigrants, many of whom worked in local quarries, railroads, mills and tanneries. Now the village has souvenir shops, a gorgeous country store, a spa, and an ice cream parlour.

From Belfountain we drove westwards through the town of Erin into Wellington County, an area of fertile farmland, punctuated by rivers, gorges, small lakes, and golf courses. Our next stop on this country drive was the small town of Fergus, a town celebrated for its Scottish Heritage which Fergus celebrates each year, usually during the second week of August, with the Fergus Scottish Festival. During this three-day event, visitors from all over the world delight in all aspects of traditional Highland Games with a wee bit of present flare tossed in.

Fergus has a number of historic buildings in the city center area, and a major draw in this small town is the Fergus Market, housed in the historic Beatty Brothers Farm Implement Manufacturing building which overlooks the Beatty Dam and dates back to the 1830s. The foundry was the first industrial location in Fergus and now houses a diverse collection of merchants, food retailers, and artisans.

Just outside Fergus is the Wellington County Museum and Archives. The museum stands majestically overlooking the once mill-laden Grand River. Built of locally quarried limestone in 1877 as the House of Industry and Refuge, this signpost structure then provided shelter for the “deserving poor”, the aged and the homeless for very nearly a century. The museum now gives visitors an opportunity to experience the cultural legacy left by the gallant settlers to this vast county of rolling hills, stony fields, deep gorges and quaint villages.

Another few kilometres down the road is the country town of Elora, one of Ontario’s favourite weekend excursion destinations. Elora is situated in a gorgeous nature area with glacial rock formations, and its most stunning ecological feature is the Elora River which plunges over a number of rapids into the spectacular Elora Gorge. The mill sitting at the top of the gorge, aptly called the Elora Mill, has been turned into an upscale fine dining restaurant and country inn with 32 guest rooms.

The Elora Gorge facial appearance several kilometres of 80-foot cliffs, caverns, rapids and silent pools. During the summer, hiking along the cliffs and inner-tubing through the gorge are favourite pastimes. Hiking trails start right at the Elora Mill. During the winter months visitors indulge in cross-country skiing and scenic nature walks through the area. The Grand River also provides brilliant opportunities for glide-fishing, canoeing and kayaking.

The Elora-Cataract trail crosses 47 kilometres of scenic countryside. Between Fergus and Elora the trail passes by the Elora Quarry Conservation Area, an abandoned quarry that is a favourite spot for a refreshing dip. The silent farmland around Elora is perfect for long country bike rides, and numerous golf courses round out the activities on offer.

During our visit yesterday, Elora was nicely dressed up for Halloween – a variety of ghouls, ghosts, spiders, monsters and witches adorned the buildings, balconies and lamp posts along the town’s main streets.The town also offers a variety of shops, antique tales, galleries and diverse dining establishments. Horse-drawn coach rides throughout town are also a well loved activity for tourists.

Not far from Elora you can visit Ontario’s last remaining enclosed bridge in Montrose, and you’ll have a chance to explore Ancient Peacefulness Mennonite Country. Summer brings a variety of festivals to this area, including the Elora Festival which is a one-month musical showcase of internationally acclaimed musicians and singers.

About 15 minutes south of Elora is the major city of this area: Guelph is a university and manufacturing city with a population of more than 100,000. Its diverse economy also includes high technology enterprises and now Guelph is one of the fastest growing economic regions in all of Canada. Similar to Fergus and Elora, Guelph was founded by Scottish settlers in the 1820s at the junction of the Eramosa and Speed Rivers. The University of Guelph Department of Scottish Studies associations academic research to the community of those with Scottish ancestry.The city facial appearance many trails for hiking, biking, skiing and horseback riding and a variety of riverside dining establishments.

Guelph’s most stunning architectural feature is the impressive Church of Our Lady Immaculate, a Gothic-Revival structure begun in 1877 and completed in 1888. The twin towers, more than 200 feet high, were not completed until 1926. The Church of Our Lady Immaculate is one of Ontario’s largest and most impressive churches.

This time we didn’t have a chance to explore Guelph in detail as it was getting late afternoon and we had to head back. But there will be another time for exploring this gorgeous, historic city and other surrounding communities. But our small excursion out of the city was a perfect Saturday getaway for exploring the history and countryside just outside of Toronto.
