What is a good road bike for me? PLZ help!!! Are you selling one? I might buy!?

I am about 5′4-5′5 and i want to get a new road bike, but everywhere i look, i find the road bikes to be made for riders that are 5′7 and above. I dont want a woman’s bike, as my male friends will also be using this bike, rarely but still.
I want a bike for under 500$ and i was thinking of getting either of these bikes:

I want to find a mens and womens bike that has at least a couple of gears and is smooth for between $150-$250.

mountain bike sales What are some good mountain bikes for under 500?
I’m looking to get into moutain biking but I don’t know much about bikes. I recently went to my local store looking for something in the $300-500 range. The sales person said he could sell me a “gary fisher piranha” for $525 marked down from $650ish. I’m about 5′ 4″ and 125 lbs, so it was his last small frame piranha. I don’t really see many other gary fisher’s on the web, so I was wondering if it’s a excellent brand. I’m looking to do off-trail riding (doubtless upstate New York), but will need to go onto road sometimes. The vendor recommended just fitting some new tires on a moutain bike. I was wondering if that’s a excellent thought? Any recommendations for bikes? Thanks.

Thanks to the person who answered my other question ;)

The bike is really ancient and last time I took it in, cost more then the bike did to get it out of the repair shop.

I also found out the hard way….Walmart bikes suck lol. (sorry Walmart). The bike I have now is a yard sale one I picked up.

I bike daily with my dogs on a hiking trail. I want a mountain bike style (don’t like those thin 10 speeds) and I’d like to find one that can withstand the elements (if its not thundering I’ve ridden the bike in the rain as well).

Any dreams on a excellent brand? Thanks

i called int he local bike shop and questioned what the cheapest mountain bike they had was and it was this: http://norco.com/bikes/mountain/adventure/pinnacle/

its 350 dollars on sale and no PST on bikes so with tax 360 dollars

i original had a duel suspension bike formm canadian tire (box store) evne though the dual suspension was a gimmick it did provide excellent confort

is the norco a excellent brand?will it last? shoudl i even bother getting a biek since im in my last year of high school lol
